ARTISTS HELPING THE HOMELESS

Transportation and direct support are provided to people from all segments of the local homeless population, sheltered and unsheltered. Services are requested by shelters, hospitals, recovery programs, law enforcement, courts, bus and train stations, churches, partner agencies, former clients, and individuals in immediate need. GAP services may include local rides, short-term overnight support, food and utility assistance, clothing, supplies, documentation support, medication access, and help identifying and following through with appropriate services.

Case workers at hospitals, recovery and homeless agencies, jails, and other facilities request assistance with unhoused people being discharged. The process begins with a needs assessment, usually at the referring facility, where AHH staff help identify and often secure placement at another agency or program. AHH is unique in transporting the person to the placement, helping ensure the person has what is needed for admission, and making a warm handoff. When appropriate, AHH staff provide follow-up support. AHH also bridges gaps with temporary housing, meals, transportation, and supportive services when no immediate placement is available.

In 2025, AHH housed 189 individuals in AHH facilities, with an average of 61 residents housed per night. AHH operates respite and transitional housing in Kansas City, Overland Park, and Lawrence, including Bodhi, Concord, Kahana, Kairos, Finnegan, and Meraki. These houses fill short-term housing gaps for men who need a clean, sober, supportive environment while addressing issues that led to or resulted from homelessness. Residents have access to peer support, transportation, recovery meetings, medical and dental care connections, physical fitness, community service, social reintegration, life skills, counseling resources, legal assistance, and employment or education support. The original Sunday Meal provides a consistent way for AHH to stay in touch with unhoused people in midtown Kansas City, provide services, and build trust. Meals are prepared and served by local groups. AHH often brings donated clothing, blankets, hygiene items, and other basic supplies for distribution. From time to time, other services and goods are provided by community partners. The meal remains an important engagement point for individuals who may be disconnected from formal systems but are willing to accept help through a familiar, trusted relationship.
