Mission Statement info

THE MISSION OF THE MEMPHIS MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & HISTORY (MOSH) IS TO INSPIRE DISCOVERY THROUGH COLLECTING, PRESERVING AND INTERPRETING THE CULTURAL HISTORIES AND NATURAL SCIENCES THAT SHAPE OUR REGION. THIS SUPPORTS OUR VISION OF BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO SHARE A RICHER UNDERSTANDING OF ONE ANOTHER AND THE WORLD AROUND US.

Education Experiences - Onsite
MoSH provides educational experiences onsite at the Pink Palace Museum, AutoZone Dome at the Sharpe Planetarium, Lichterman Nature Center, Coon Creek Science Center, and the Mallory-Neely House. Instructors utilize the natural science and cultural history exhibits as a catalyst to engage with students, providing 175,000+ experiences annually at the Pink Palace Museum (pre-pandemic). Programs complement science and history state curriculum standards of TN, MS, and AR.

Education Experiences - Outreach
MoSH provides educational experiences through a library of outreach programs. The long-running Suitcases program offers 18 STEM and history topics, from nanotechnology to regional Native American history. Activities, experiments, and hands-on materials encourage object-based learning. Thirteen virtual field trips were created to serve area schools during the pandemic, and are available to extend MoSH's impact beyond the traditionally served nearby counties. MoSH instructors also travel to area schools to present STEM and history programs. Pre-pandemic, MoSH provided 58,000+ outreach educational experiences annually.

Environmental Education - Lichterman Nature Center
MoSH-Lichterman utilizes a 65-acre campus of forest, meadow and lake habitats to engage students and visitors in programs emphasizing our role as stewards of the Earth and our relationship with the flora/fauna of the Mid-South. The Backyard Wildlife Center, Visitor Center and teaching pavilions offer settings for visitors to engage with native mammals, insects and birds, led by trained teacher-naturalists. Outreach education programs are also provided, along with guided nature walks, birdwatching programs, seed swaps, and other community events.
