Public Foundations

Organizations, sometimes referred to as public charities, that derive their funding or support primarily from the general public in carrying out their social, educational, religious or other charitable activities serving the common welfare. Although public foundations may provide direct charitable services to the public as other nonprofits do, their primary focus is on grantmaking.

What does it mean for a nonprofit to be CRA aligned?
Each nonprofit on Community Qualifier has been reviewed by findCRA utilizing a dual evaluation process. Nonprofits are first evaluated by our proprietary algorithm, CRANIA, and then further validated by our CRA experts. When nonprofit passes both parts of this review, we create a nonprofit profile for them on Community Qualifier. From there, a nonprofit can claim their profile and add additional information including their programs & services, counties served, targeted clients and income groups and more.

Beyond the Scholarship
Our outreach to WAEF students focuses on encouragement to on-time degree completion, career exploration, and professional development. We host professional development workshops on budgeting, interview skills, resume and cover letters, understanding employee benefits, and networking. We take students on live tours and host Zoom workshops with newer and experienced professionals for students to learn about what they do now and their career progress. WAEF assists students land internships, job shadows, informational interviews, and career jobs. Encouragement and motivation is provided by care packages, group mentoring and coaching to stay on track with degree plan.

Scholarship Training
The WAEF Scholarship Training program is provided in the 45 rural school districts we serve. Through this program we can serve all students in our communities, not just those that qualify for or receive WAEF scholarships. We provide training and a scholarship resource booklet (outlines important steps for completion) to high school seniors in the classroom during the class day to ensure we reach all students, even those that might not have considered themselves scholarship contenders. The training class focuses on following directions (avoid disqualification) and telling your story to real people. Through this outreach we serve about 4000-4500 high school seniors in predominantly lower income rural areas.

Renewal Scholarships
We are still feeling the effects of the COVID19 pandemic, as we are seeing a greater need for our renewal students (especially those that might need a fifth year). While we maintain that we help support the first 4 years of the student's college education, we are seeing a greater number of students that are needing a fifth year to graduate. These are students that highly qualified and are working towards degree completion. Once you are a part of the WAEF family, as long as you are meeting GPA standards and are working towards degree completion, we continue to help support our students. Many of our students had to return home during the pandemic to help provide care to family members and they also had to work to help support their families.
