Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana

Fund Financial Empowerment Programs for Low-Income Middle School Students

Needs Summary

Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana requests support to serve 4,300 students who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch in our region with the financial empowerment program JA Finance Park. JA Finance Park helps students build a foundation of intelligent personal-finance skills through an experiential real-life simulation. The students' experience begins with teacher-led personal-finance instruction and culminates in an exciting visit to JA Finance Park, a reality-based simulation that gives students the opportunity to put their new money management skills to the test by completing a balanced family budget. (Please see attachment for additional JA programs that qualify for CRA credit.)

Details of Need

Given how important financial skills are to navigate our life, it is essential to teach kids about financial empowerment at a young age. Financial illiteracy is more common among low-income individuals because they typically do not have wide access to accurate financial information. With such illiteracy, youth in low-income households can fall victim later as adults to scams, high-interest rate loans, and increasing debt.

Community Impact

Students will recognize the fundamental role of income in managing their personal finances and the factors that affect income and take-home pay. They will understand the decisions they make about education and career will have an impact on their potential income and quality of life. Students will learn about various short and long-term savings and investment vehicles and will discuss how setting financial goals and being an informed consumer will help them better manage their money.

Incorporated in 1949 and now serving 27 counties throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana, Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana (JA) is a leading provider of youth educational programs focused on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. JA’s classroom and experiential programs begin at the elementary school level, teaching children how they can influence the world around them as individuals, workers and consumers. The learning continues through middle and high school grades, preparing students for the economic and workforce issues they will face in the future. Given that in two-thirds of the counties served by JA the majority of students are eligible for federal Free or Reduced Lunch programs, JA offers numerous opportunities for bankers to assist underserved, low-income students and areas. Under the CRA, providing grants or volunteer support for JA’s programs targeted to low-income students would qualify as a community development activity and would be eligible for credit during CRA examinations.
